  • Description: The winemaking is considered a driving force for the promotion of rural land borders, through the enhancement of the wine landscape and the excellence of local products. The objective of the project is to strengthen the competitiveness of the wine and the attractiveness of the rural tourism, by promoting a model of sustainable viticulture, based on the dissemination and sharing of knowledge and innovative research across all components of the wine industry. The concept of sustainable viticulture fact suggests solutions to the current problems of the wine-making: economic sustainability, competitiveness, diversification of production and valorisation of typical products, and environmental sustainability The project, coordinated by IGA – Institute of Applied Genomics, involves three public partners (University of Nova Gorica, University of Udine – Department of Agriculture and Environmental science (DISA), Agriculture and Forest Chamber of Slovenia, Agriculture and Forest Institute of Nova Gorica (KGZS – Zavod GO) and three private partners (Bigot & Bigot Studio Associate, Consortium for Wine Protection of “Colli Orientali del Friuli” E “RAMANDOLO”, Brda Consortium, Institute for marketing and promotion of Brda. The partnership reflects the involvement of the entire research-experimentation-enterprises operating in the wine-growing cross border areas of Italy and Slovenia. Planned activities Knowledge transfer between research institutions and testing institutions, associations of producers, engineers and companies in the wine sector; Testing of vineyard management systems with low environmental impact; Understanding and appreciation of wine genetic resources used in the past in the area; Protection of the environment and of the workers' health against pollution caused by pesticides and synthetic minerals; Promotion of cross-border wine tourism, linked to the image of the typical products and to the healthy production that respects the environment. Expected results: The project is organized in work packages operating in each of which the components of research / testing / knowledge transfer companies are integrated to the achievement of the following results: Enhancement and protection of typical local genetic resources; Understanding of the genetic characteristics of the plant material, resistant to fungal diseases, recently produced by breeding genetic programs funded by the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia; Comparison of the genetic characteristics of the variety of historical interest and local varieties compared to the international spread varieties; Reduction of chemical inputs in the vineyard; Optimizing of agronomic practices in the vineyard; Adaptability evaluation of the new grape varieties resistant to major fungal diseases and to the pedoclimate of the major wine-growing areas eligible for the call; Finalizing of a territorial information system in order to manage controlled fight against the grape diseases; Definition of guidelines to reduce chemical inputs in the vineyard from the environmental sustainability point of view, without compromising the health and quality of grapes during harvest; Determining the reduction of pesticide residues in grapes and wines obtained through the sustainable viticulture method; Knowledge of the physiological responses of the vine to the different treatments imposed; Monitoring the effect of agricultural practices on the physiology of the vine and on the biosynthetic pathways of phenol compounds and aromatic hydrocarbons, by analyzing the expression of the entire set of genes, and provide a more detailed definition of the optimal conditions of cultivation for each vine variety and growing sub-; Obtaining wines meeting the objectives and quality standards of the high value winemakers from the main viticulture areas, eligible for the project on the basis of traditional varieties cultivated by sustainable viticulture method; Economic model of sustainable viticulture; Estimate of cost-effectiveness for the winemaker that adops farming practices and varieties proposed in this project; Estimate of the impact at the local level and of the promotion of the tourism. More information The direct and indirect benefits expected for the wine industry in the eligible areas: • Reduction of production costs for wineries; • Valorization of typical local products; • Healthiness of the product to the consumer; • Reduction of the environmental costs for the society due to the minor use of pesticides; • Increased tourist attractiveness of rural areas; • Consolidation of the system of transfer of scientific and technical knowledge, and innovation in the supply chain; • Capitalization of investment in research and innovation used in viticulture.
