Sheep's wool has always been considered a product of secondary importance in sheep breeding. Despite the fact that in recent times sheep's wool has be used increasingly for finished products, it is still treated as a waste very frequently, finishing in landfills or incinerators.
The aim of the project is to increase the quantity of wool waste. Through these activities we aim to revitalise the traditional use and carry out research in order to introduce sheep's wool and leather into modern usage, crafts and the economy in Slovenia and in Italy.
We will also build a network of cross-border workshops (sheering demonstrations, selection and storage of sheep's wool, wool felting, production of soap from animal fats) also for the recognition of good practices (demonstrations of sheep's wool and leather dyeing using natural dyes, preparation of leather using natural raw materials), in order to increase knowledge of and revitalise ancient wool and leather processing techniques; we will also deliver cross-border vocational training courses and run competitions open to all participants in the precious wool fibre production and transformation process using different techniques.
Know-how and product catalogues will be produced. We will also carry out research of wool fibre and its potential uses in green building and vegetable farming.
Main products and expected results of the projects:
-reduction in the quantity of wool waste and consequently also an incentive to jointly protect and manage the environment,
-awareness raising activities on the usefulness and multiple uses of natural animal husbandry products (wool, leather, fats),
-revitalisation of traditional animal husbandry products and the use of innovative ones,
-production of the greatest possible quantities of animal products, which are thrown away despite their usefulness,
and relative introduction into daily life.
