The project will establish a new umbrella brand for the Kras region based on the slogan "Kras - a destination for indigenous products". Using a comprehensive approach, we wish to improve the quality and market presence of Teran wine and Kraški pršut (typical dry-cured ham from south-western Slovenian region Kras), two products synonymous with the region. At the same time, we wish to decrease the negative impact of intensive agriculture on the environment. In order to achieve this goal, we plan to strengthen the cooperative research and networking activities between institutions on both sides of the border, which will provide for the faster transfer of knowledge both horizontally (between research institutions themselves) and vertically (onto end users, the local population).
Planned activities:
1.1 Project coordination and management: election of an administrative board for the coordinated and timely execution of the project. Monthly meetings, 5 expert seminar visits.
2.1 Introductory activities: coordination and initial preparation of the project.
3.1 Knowledge of the Kras entomofauna: examination of harmful and beneficial insect species of Kras vineyards and meadows.
3.2. Knowledge of the Kras environment and its condition: Analysis of the contamination of waters, wells, soil, grapes and wine with pesticide residues and heavy metals. Establishment of a recycling system for used and expired spraying agents (pesticides). Monthly meetings, several expert seminars.
3.3 Knowledge of potential technological improvements in the production of traditional foods: research towards the improvement and standardization of winegrowing technologies, preparation of a joint study on standardized Teran production techniques, development of a rapid immunotest for the assessment of grape ripeness. Within the framework of these activities we are planning 3 expert excursions and the networking of regional winemakers into a cross-border organization of Teran producers. We will also prepare a study on the effects of decreased salt content on the organoleptic and nutritional properties of Kraški pršut (, and the potential consumer acceptance of Kraški pršut with a decreased salt content.
3.4 Knowledge of bioactive components in food and their interaction with the human body: within the framework of research we will examine the bioactive compounds found in Teran grapes and wine and their beneficial effect on human health and wellbeing.
4.1 Diffuse hotel: networking of accommodation providers throughout the cross-border Kras region, preparation of a project study, start-up of the diffuse hotel and its interactive webpage.
4.2 Establishment of the brand “Kras — a destination for indigenous products”: networking in the joint promotion, strategy and marketing of traditional products (Teran), consistent image design and umbrella product presentation. Monthly meetings, one expert excursion.
5.1 Transfer of knowledge to end users: presentation of research findings to end users: organization of 3 press conferences, 5 international symposia, 5 expert excursions for members of the administrative board and members of both consortiums.
6.1 PR and promotion: establishment of a cross-border body for networking and group promotion, presentation of the winegrowing consortium and Kras cuisine in major cities and at various public events.
One primary goal of the project is to connect accommodation providers on both sides of the border into a diffuse hotel network with an integrated offer of indigenous products. The project is inter-disciplinary in nature. Its overall purpose is the improvement of the wellbeing and economic standing of the local population. In addition to entrepreneurship, it also focuses on social, environmental and cultural relations, in accordance with the Strategy for the Development of Slovenia and Italy, and the Lisbon Strategy."
