  • Description: In the wooded area of Basovizza the project will set up a highly technological route specially equipped for blind, visually impaired, disabled and physically impaired people. The Igouza wood is often visited by excursionists, sportspeople and elderly persons because of its level ground; moreover it is crossed by forest routes and trails, and it is easy to reach from Trieste on public transport. The trail named after Josef Ressel crosses an area reforested by the Austrians foresters, who had established here, since 1830, the centre of activities for the reforesting of the entire Trieste Karst area. This itinerary unwinds therefore along the historical trails and connects them to the routes which have been recently set up by the corps of foresters. Basovizza is today an important centre for scientific research, host to the Research Area of the Synchrotron Light Laboratory, hence the idea to implement a low environmental impact advanced technology along this route. Thanks to the cooperation of the Regional Branch of the Blind Association, it was possible to adopt along the trail an innovative infrared technology that allows, through a system of transmitters and receivers, the fruition of vocal information (in Italian, English and Slovene) on the direction and environmental and historical peculiarities of the surrounding territory. The route winds its way for a total length of around four kilometres, connecting Basovizza with the Lipica stud farm, where horse therapy has been available to the blind for several years. Specifically, the project contributed to make the Italian section of the trail accessible, for a distance of around two km.
